Our teams
The Permanent Representative, Kim Darroch, has overall responsibility for managing UKREP, negotiating the UK’s interests in the EU and providing policy advice to the Europe Minister, Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister. He works alongside Andy Lebrecht, the Deputy Permanent Representative and Tim Barrow, our representative on the Political and Security Committee.
Our three Ambassadorial level representatives are supported by a team of ten senior managers, known as Counsellors. Eight of these manage teams who are responsible for promoting UK interests on a specific area of EU policy.
In these thematic teams, most staff will represent the UK in regular meetings with counterparts from the other 26 Member States, known as working groups, to discuss co-operation at the EU level prior to Council meetings of national Ministers who will seek to find agreement on a way forward.
In some cases this will mean our staff are negotiating detailed EU legislation, in others it may mean they are discussing how the EU should co-ordinate its response to events elsewhere in the world.
These thematic teams work closely with our teams responsible for representing the devolved administrations, who all have individual offices close to UKREP's main offices in the heart of Brussels EU quarter. This close co-operation ensures that we are able to represent the interests of the UK as a whole.
We also have a Political Counsellor whose team covers cross-cutting issues from relations with the EU institutions to ministerial visits to press and communications. There is also a team of legal advisors, headed up by a Counsellor, to provide legal advice to all staff on EU policies as needed.
